Episode 4: Kamathipura and Deonar

A documentary about the reality of human trafficking starring Ana Duato and María Bernardeau.

We are reaching the end of Ana and María’s journey. After a few days becoming familiar with our work and the reality of human trafficking, they encounter one of its worst faces.

Red light areas are the epicenter of human trafficking for sexual exploitation around the world. In the areas like Kamathipura, in Mumbai, thousands of women are victims of this modern slavery. Ana and María enter its streets, with a hidden camera, and learn about the Mumbai Smiles project with the boys and girls who live in this dangerous environment, where mafia networks operate forcefully and look for their next victims among the little ones.

Later, mother and daughter visit another community in Mumbai which is also in a situation of social exclusion. A different reality but equally unacceptable. Families that live a few meters from an immense landfill and survive on what they get from it. Here, too, boys and girls are very vulnerable to different types of exploitation and school absenteeism is a breeding ground for new cases. But hope and play are also possible, even in an environment like this.

The vlog series “A smile in the backpack” delves into a problem, human trafficking, that the actress Ana Duato and her daughter María Bernardeau have seen with their own eyes and tell us about it in the first person.

This documentary series has the collaboration of Ganga Productions and you can see the full episode on our youtube channel.
