Vocational training advances at Casa Udaan
At our Udaan Home for Survivors of Human Trafficking, sewing, computer skills, and basic employment skills courses are restoring dignity and independence to women who have overcome human trafficking.
Vocational training can change a life forever. At the Udaan Home of Mumbai Smiles, located on the outskirts of Mumbai, four women survivors of human trafficking are discovering every day that a different future is possible thanks to the job training courses they receive.
More than a Shelter: A Comprehensive Training Center
The Udaan shelter doesn’t just offer temporary shelter. Its goal is to restore dignity and opportunities to women who have been trafficked or are at risk of being trafficked. Through vocational training programs, psychological support, and legal counseling, Udaan works to help these women rebuild their lives independently and safely.
The name Udaan means “flight” in Hindi, and it perfectly symbolizes the philosophy of this project: to prepare these women to fly toward an independent life. To achieve this goal, the shelter provides safe housing, food, medical care, legal support, and leisure activities, but the real driving force behind the change is the vocational training courses.
Four pillars of job training
Sewing: Weaving a New Future
The sewing workshop has become one of the most valued spaces in the Udaan house. Here, women learn everything from basic techniques to machine operation, pattern making, and design. Mumbai’s textile industry offers numerous job opportunities, and this course is specifically designed to enable graduates to access decent jobs in the sector.
During the classes, they not only develop technical skills but also regain self-confidence. The process of creating something beautiful with their own hands has a therapeutic effect that complements the psychological support they receive.
Information Technology: Connecting to the Digital World
In an increasingly digital society, computer skills are essential for accessing today’s job market. Udaan’s computer training covers everything from basic computer skills to word processing programs, spreadsheets, and internet browsing.
This training opens the door to administrative and office jobs that previously seemed unattainable for these women. It also provides them with tools to manage their personal lives more efficiently and stay connected to the outside world.
Hairdressing and aesthetics: beauty as a tool for empowerment
The hairdressing and beauty course has proven to be one of the most transformative at Udaan. This comprehensive program covers everything from basic haircutting and styling techniques to professional makeup, manicures, and beauty treatments. Women learn to use specialized tools and cosmetic products, acquiring highly valued skills in the beauty and wellness industry.
What makes this course special is its dual impact: while developing highly sought-after professional skills in Mumbai, participants also experience a profound personal transformation. The process of learning to enhance the beauty of others helps them reconnect with their own self-esteem and confidence. Many discover in this profession not only a career opportunity but a true passion that motivates them to continue growing professionally.
Preparing for the World of Work
Beyond technical skills, the third training pillar focuses on essential skills for any job: effective communication, time management, knowledge of labor rights, and preparation for job interviews.
These training sessions help women identify their own capabilities and develop the confidence to present themselves to an employer. They also learn about their rights as workers, crucial information for avoiding future situations of exploitation.
Personal Development and Recovery
Emotional recovery goes hand in hand with vocational training. Udaan women receive specialized psychological support to identify and address their emotional issues, with referrals to specialists when necessary.
The goal is for each graduate to have not only the technical skills necessary for work, but also the emotional strength and knowledge necessary to build a full and independent life.
Building Futures Through Training
The real impact of these training programs can be seen in stories like that of Lalita, a woman who entered the Udaan home four years ago and has been rebuilding her life and that of her daughter for a year now, or that of Smita, who, after years of living at Udaan to avoid being a victim of forced marriage, is pursuing social work studies.
The Udaan home’s vocational training courses represent much more than simple educational programs. They are tools for social transformation that give these women not only the ability to work, but also the dignity to choose their own path.
Every skill learned, every certificate earned, and every small achievement in the classroom becomes a step closer to true freedom. Because true freedom is not just escaping exploitation, but having the tools to build an independent and prosperous life.
At Mumbai Smiles, we have been committed to programs like Udaan for twenty years, which sustain our peaceful action against trafficking and poverty.
