Gender is a critical determinant of mental health and mental illness. The patterns of psychological distress and psychiatric disorder among women are different from those seen among men. Women have a higher level of internalizing disorders while men show a higher level of externalizing disorders. Gender differences are particularly evident in the rates of common mental disorders where women mostly predominate. Differences between genders have been reported in the age of onset of symptoms, clinical features, frequency of psychotic symptoms, course, social adjustment, and long-term outcome of severe mental disorders.

The mental health state is more grave for women who have been physically, mentally and emotionally abused for a long period of time.

On 27th August, 2019, Mumbai Smiles Foundation in its continuous endeavour to provide victims of human trafficking with opportunities to improve their mental health, conducted a psycho social workshop on dealing with anxiety. Experts at the workshop demonstrated the importance of mindfulness and grounding techniques to deal with anxiety.

Through the training, beneficiaries learnt how to divert their mind from the horrors they experienced, and learned how to prevent facing anxiety in the future. They were taught how to deal with the current situation in a positive and beneficial way.

A total of 10 women participated in this activity.
The women found the workshop helpful especially with respect to hearing each other’s issues and being able to support one another.
