Located in the city of Pudicherry, in the state of Tamil Nadu, the Shine Home has been fostering children from rural areas on the outskirts of the city since 2017 while they undergo cancer treatment at the JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research) hospital. The medical care they need is provided by the hospital, but the home offers each child, along with a family member, a place to stay for the duration of the therapy, and helps to cover the cost of the medicines they need, as the government only pays 50% of the cost.
In addition, the home provides them with psychological support sessions and paediatric check-ups, as well as leisure and recreational activities, celebrations (birthdays, local festivities, etc.), yoga classes, etc. The aim is not only to provide them with a physical place to stay while they are undergoing cancer therapy, but also a place where they can feel comfortable and in the best possible state of mind to face their process of fighting cancer with guarantees.
