147 screened for Malaria in Bhandup

In Awareness, Health, Infectious Diseases, Mumbai Smiles

A special Malaria screening camp was recently organised in Bhavani Nagar, Bhandup, an area in the northern part of Mumbai, towards the end of this megacity. Areas such as this, with bare minimum facilities available and poor hygiene and no cleanliness are breeding grounds of mosquitoes and other insects and hence are at high risk of infectious diseases such as Malaria, Dengue etc. And hence the Infectious Diseases team periodically organizes such free health camps at our different project areas.

This camp was successful in screening 47 male and 100 females, including infants and adults. The first step for each beneficiary was a regular health check up, including Blood Pressure, Temperature, Height and Weight along with general medical history. Following which the beneficiaries were checked for symptoms of malaria and then a blood test was done for detecting the virus, if present.

With the support of Dr. Sushant Surmane and his team of 19 doctors, technicians, specialists, all the 147 citizens present were screened and given a personal counselling on maintaining health and hygiene on a regular basis as well. Those who needed medicines for general health issue, were also provided with the same. A couple of days later, based on the reports of the beneficiaries, further treatment was carried out for those detected with Malaria (or other diseases) and we are very thankful to Dr. Sushant and his team for their complete support in making this health camp successful for the Mumbai Smiles family!
