Lara at the Holy Spirit Hospital, celebrating Nurse’s Day

Awareness is the first step towards progress. Knowledge about the conditions around us and sensitivity towards it makes us more receptive towards change and development. The New Glances Project at Mumbai Smiles aims to raise awareness nationally and internationally about the situation and life conditions of millions of people living in the slums of Mumbai. It is through this project, that people from all over the world get an opportunity to visit our project sites, experience the progress and thus leave with an indelible impression. Ever since its initiation, Mumbai Smiles has had an exceptional number of 2000+ national and international visitors from across 21 different countries so far.

Through the New Glances project Lara Ruiz visited various projects at Mumbai Smiles. She visited the Balwadis, Life Skills Empowerment project, Holy Spirit Hospital, SEED tailoring center and SEED handicraft center. She also attended the nurse’s day event and interacted with some of the HOPE project beneficiaries at the Holy Spirit Hospital. She also accompanied the HOPE Program Officer, Ms. Supriya for a Home visit to one of our beneficiary Shivam’s place. She appreciated the projects for the comprehensive structures they had and the holistic approach to the underlying problem. She had extensive meetings with the Unit Heads of Health and Education to discuss and give insights about the ongoing projects.

She shared her experience “Visit to Shivam’s place was like an eye opener and how the project reaches out to the needy. Its been a pleasure to meet some of the LSE girls. So pretty, so active and so smart. Learning how to become more confident, how to feed for themselves and their community in the process. I hope their learning process can continue for many many years and will help them live their lives the way they think is worth it- with all the freedom and right of choice they deserve.”
