Christmas is coming! And as Charles M. Schulz, the late American Cartoonist, creator of the ‘Peanuts’ series, talks about Christmas being an occasion to do a little extra for somebody else, we at Mumbai Smiles completely agree with him and believe that Christmas, by its very nature of being celebrated as birthday of Jesus Christ, is a festival of love, giving and selflessness.

The ‘1000 Hands’ project, earlier known as the Seed Project, is one of livelihood for the women of the slum communities. Of the seven project areas where we work in, we have different courses chalked out, ranging from Tailoring to Beautician to Computer Courses for the women of these communities. The training is to empower the women of the underprivileged background to earn a decent livelihood for themselves and to be able to support themselves and their family. And for this, various projects are undertaken such as uniform stitching, designing and creating purses, designer bags etc. Along with these, at the end of each year, there is a special project of making bright and colourful handmade Christmas and New Year cards which are then sold out in the market, especially in Spain.

This year, the 1000 Hands project is making a pack of six different Christmas and New Year cards, all designed and created by the women of the 1000 Hands centre and the production is now underway with the festive mood in the air! A source of income for these women, the cards have been a super hit in the last few years, ever since this annual activity took shape and we hope it will be an even bigger hit this year – *Fingers Crossed*!
