The beginning of this new academic year has brought with itself a new positive development. Our Balwadis, which were 23 in number earlier have now reached 25 with the launch of 2 new Balwadis at the start of this academic year. This has been possible with the support from CIPLA foundation.

To celebrate the launch of these Balwadis, we organized a small function. Members from team of Mumbai Smiles and Cipla foundation addressed the event. Mr. Kutumbe, factory manager at Cipla foundation gave an inaugural speech at the event. This was followed by a speech from Mr. Narendra Kumar Dundu, in which he addressed the importance of health, nutrition and education for the wellbeing of children. The event was a great success – thanks to Mr. Narendra Kumar Dundu, Nirmal, Vikas, Bapu and Mrs. Kushala Shetty. It was only because of their efforts that the program turned out to be successful.

The Balwadi program of Mumbai Smiles aims to engage kids in formal and non-formal learning – learning songs, alphabets, numbers, colors, names of animals, and other basics that pave the way for education at a bigger school. Many of the parents of these underprivileged kids are daily wage laborers, who don’t have the time and money to give them the right care. So, the Balwadis are often a second home for these children.

The opening of these new Balwadis is in line with our strategy of penetrating the slums of Mumbai. Our objective is to reach more and more children, which is possible only through the launch of new Balwadis from time to time. 60 new children have already been enrolled in these 2 new Balwadis.

We look forward to open many more Balwadis in future and uplift the society by helping young children inculcate an interest and aptitude for education.
