Third eye screening camp organized

 In Mumbai Smiles

Despite the magnitude of the problem of avoidable blindness in developing countries, studies have shown that only a small percentage of the people needing cataract surgery or other treatment actually seek it. Moreover, eye care in the developing world still suffers from:

  • Financial and logical barriers to access
  • Low patient awareness of services available
  • Low doctor/patient ratio

This is where Mumbai Smiles has taken the initiative to reach out to potential patients – the “unreached” in order to provide services to the people who need them the most.

Our two eye screening camps, held at Marol Pragtik School, Andheri and St. Rocks High School, Marol, Mumbai, were very successful. We were able to reach out to a large number of beneficiaries.

A third such eye camp was recently arranged for Diabetic retinopathy patients at Marolpipeline on 18th January 2014 between 9am to 2 pm. The venue of the camp was the Gurudwara hall at Marolpipeline, Andheri(E), Mumbai. Once again, the camp was organized in collaboration with Aditya Jyoti foundation. The venue was made available to Mumbai Smiles by Ms. Rita, an associate of World Vision organization.  Overall 90 people were screened, of which 6 had cataract.
