The preschool life begins for Mumbai Smiles Foundation kids

There are 13 new preschools – nine for street children and four for victims of human trafficking – that have been established this year

The preschool life for a child begins when they are very young, with little understanding of life. Mumbai Smiles Foundation steps into the lives of these young ones at a tender age. There are 13 new preschools – nine for street children and four for victims of human trafficking – that have been established this year.

For thousands of street children living in the streets of Mumbai, life has not been easy. Many of them are found begging on the streets; peddling on the roads; and even getting addicted to drugs to satiate their hunger.  Others are victims of human trafficking, where their mothers find it difficult to live in the city.

While the situation is grim, Mumbai Smiles Foundation realised that both children of Victims of Human Trafficking, as well as Street Children, were ignored by the education system and deserved to be educated. As part of this, Mumbai Smiles Foundation has established 9 preschools for street children, and 4 preschools for children of victims of human trafficking to ensure they are off the streets, get quality education, are provided nourishment, and can have opportunities to dream about a bright future.

Besides teaching them and providing quality food to the children, Mumbai Smiles Foundation also conducts physical activities like yoga in every Preschool. Furthermore, teachers use educational toys and methods to impart basic education.

As first-generation learners in their families, the preschools for children of victims of human trafficking provides a foundation to break them out of the cycle of illiteracy. Since their mothers are not educated, it is important to introduce education into their families for any development and progress.

Children on the streets are generally malnourished due to neglect from parents and tend to be forced to help their parents doing odd jobs. When it comes to the preschools for street children, Mumbai Smiles Foundation provides nutrition to them that will ensure that they are healthy. We also impart knowledge to parents on how to take care of children, and the importance of vaccinations and education.

With 13 new schools and that many more children entering the education system, Mumbai Smiles Foundation is all set to build a foundation for these kids
