Like Mother, Like Daughter – Meghana (Anonymous Hero)

In Awareness, Future Smiles, Mumbai Smiles, Thank You

Today we wish to share the story of our anonymous hero, 21 year old Meghana who is one of the oldest beneficiaries of Mumbai Smiles and a very bright one, at that! Elder daughter of an electrician and nurse, she was has been born and brought up in Mumbai and is going to start with the final year of Electronics Engineering, after the vacations.

Belonging to a very small income family, Meghana was very confused about which path of education to take as a child, without increasing the financial burden on her parents. That is when, during the phase of community mobilization, Meghana was selected, given the low monthly family income and socio-economic background, to become a beneficiary of the Higher Education project (then Future Smiles) and this is when she says, her life found a way. “With the scholarship from the project taking care of her educational expenses to a great extend, and with the capacity building sessions helping her with various life skills as well as time management and stress management, I found new insights into how to cultivate a good study-hobbies balance and could now explore the various opportunities coming my way through Mumbai Smiles as well as school activities,” says Meghana. “My regular interaction with the team of Mumbai Smiles made me determined to work hard and make a place for myself. I was always fond of cars and machines and soon I found myself taking admission into Electronic Engineering.”

Here, we would want to add how talented Meghana’s mother, Prafullata is too. With her constant efforts to make sure that her child does better and better in life, Prafullate was super active in all the activities of our organisation. And having had a good relationship with us since the beginning of Mumbai Smiles (she helped a lot initially in community mobilization), Prafullata soon made her way in to our organisation as our Animator for the LSE (Life Skills Empowerment program).

Recently, the proud mother Prafullata, came to show us how Meghana’s efforts in leading a team (for a College Technical festival in the city of Mumbai, involving machines and robots!) have also been covered in Maharashtra Times, a well known newspaper that speaks of Meghana’s achievements and it shows that her success isn’t limited to Mumbai Smiles Foundation. Well, like mother, like daughter, we must say! And we will share the story of Prafullata too very soon! Now, back to Meghana!
