Vocational Education and Life skills – need of the hour

“The state of Maharashtra and the city of Mumbai have failed to protect its children.”  Maharashtra remained fourth among states for the number of crimes against children in 2013 while Mumbai climbed to second position in 2013 overtaking Bangalore with a 74.5% rise in the crimes. The only mildly bright spot is the small drop in feticide cases (29%). There has been a spurt under every other head, even kidnapping — 90.2% in the state and 96.5% in the city — and rape —68.6% in state and 56.7% in city. Cases of rape of children keep coming up with a sickening regularity, particularly in Mumbai’s slums. Despite increased police patrolling, the police is unable to prevent rapes by persons known to minors.*
Absence of proper education and employment opportunities forces people to take up these heinous crimes.  The education and value system in our society lacks imparting social, moral and spiritual values at the school level. Conscious and organised attempts should hence be undertaken for imparting education in social, moral and spiritual values. Every teacher must take up the responsibility of making children aware of five universal values: truth, peace, non-violence, righteous conduct and love. Until now, these values have not been given requisite place in the curriculum and textbooks. Subsequent policy revisions and curriculum formulation should incorporate the same. Education is the only ray of hope to achieve tangible attitudinal transformation and create a society that values character formation as its basic goal.
The non-implementation of vocational education at the secondary stage of education has resulted in acute shortage of skilled manpower, particularly to meet middle-level requirements in labour force. However, a new ministry of skill development has been developed and one can expect reasonable improvements in future.
We at Mumbai Smiles, take the initiative through our projects to achieve the same. Our projects such as Life skills Empowerment, Girl Child education and Future Smiles aim to impart the right value system to beneficiaries. Education with responsibility to ensure learning is holistic. SEED further imparts vocational skills to empower women so as to allow them to become independent and have a say in the decision making process in their families.
The most recent initiative is our Green Batti Project where we mentor teenagers at a tender age, allowing them to become responsible citizens of the society.
We certainly envision a bright future for India and hope that the requisite changes will take place soon and disparity shall be diminished.
