Recently in our Life Skills Education program held on 31st January 2014, there was a surprise performance( a short play) on child labour by 8-10 primary school students of Mapkhan School. They had also performed this play earlier in the area to promote the fight against child labour. The objective behind this impeccable performance was to encourage parents to send their children to school so that these children become educated and gain employment, thereby eliminating poverty in the society

Child labour refers to the employment of children in any work that deprives children of their childhood, interferes with their ability to attend regular school, and that is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful. In developing countries, child labour is still major a roadblock to development. International Labour Organisation (ILO) suggests that poverty is the greatest single cause behind child labour. For impoverished households, income from a child’s work is usually crucial for his or her own survival or for that of the household.

The performance clearly demonstrated this problem. The most captivating part though, was when students themselves had tears in their eyes while performing. Everybody present became emotional. The performance touched the hearts of all the people present, including our guests.

Mumbai Smiles looks forward to partner with these students with the aim of promoting its various projects in the area of education. We expect that this partnership will act as a catalyst to create awareness in the requisite areas thereby helping us fight against various evils crept in the society.
