Child care and maternity are critical health aspects that need attention among the community members. Mumbai Smiles recently launched its new project mMitra to involve in maternal health care.

mMitra is a free mobile voice call service that provides culturally appropriate comprehensive information on preventive care and simple interventions to reduce maternal and infant mortality and morbidity in urban India. The voice calls are in the local dialect, specific to the women’s gestational age or the age of the infant and are sent weekly/twice a week free of cost directly to pregnant women and mothers with infants. Women in the community are enrolled by the sakhis.

As a part of this project Armman foundation organizes regular training programs for Field supervisors of all the partner NGOs. This training program was held on 20th of May at the Mumbai Smiles office. More than 30 members attended the training program from various partner NGOs. The program was organized with the objective of reiterating the mMitra project’s concept and to acquaint the Field Supervisors with the mMitra communication material. The revised mMitra flip chart was explained and discussed among the Field Supervisors so that they can share the information with the Arogya Sakhis who closely work with the beneficiaries. The program also ensured to gather the experiences of the Field Coordinators while working with the beneficiaries. The training also touched upon the topic of Offline Data entry and coordinating work with Sakhis. In order to make the training more comprehensive a Street Play was performed by the Mumbai Smiles Balwadi teachers. The play highlighted the commonly faced issues by women in the communities of Mumbai. The play was highly appreciated for its delivery and content.

Ms. Smita Shivtarkar, one of the Field Coordinators from the project noted that “These training programs help us update our knowledge about the project and interact more efficiently with the sakhis and beneficiaries. These programs also give us a platform to learn from the experiences of other Field Coordinators and implement the same to our work”
