LSE 2016-17 batch bows out with a blast

 In Mumbai Smiles

All the activities for the previous academic/financial year, 2016-17 has come to a case and summer vacations have started. So is the case with the Life Skills Empowerment project as well. But these Girls, an excited and super energetic bunch of adolescents didn’t say goodbye with just words, but organised, all by themselves, a super fun event for themselves and invited the project team as well.

The 2 hour gala included a series of activities, right from a welcome song in the local language of Marathi, to a dance performance to a skit on the issues faced by women and children in the community and finally a segment of sharing of experiences where a few girls discussed with everyone on how LSE became a positive impact on their lives and changed it for the better.

“I was a completely clueless and careless girl about my life earlier, used to loiter around with no care in the world about what I would do when I grew up. This worried my parents. Additionally, belonging to a financially weak background made me immune to anything and so I didn’t even bother to learn about the world and the opportunities that are available for us all. I also had stage fright and didn’t participate in any community or school activities at all” shared Priti. “After joining LSE, I understood the important of education and knowledge, the different opportunities and fields of career available and learnt the skills of communication, public speaking and got rid of so many myths around health, especially girl’s health. Today I am much more aware about myself and my surroundings, am confident of dealing with life situations and love to participate in events and celebrations! This has been possible only because of LSE and the people associated with it!”

“LSE helped me understand the concept and preventive measures for sexual abuse, mental and physical abuse as well as recognize addictions in people. I used to see some boys misguiding other students of my school and get involved in bad behavior of addiction and assaults. When I shared this with my LSE Animator, she helped me reach out to those victim students as well as my school superiors to put an end to this,” shared Vidya. “Because of LSE’s exposure visits and modules, I have seen an improvement in my confidence and personality. I am able to share good values with my parents and information on so many other important things. I also got to make friends here, with whom I have great bonding now!

And after sharing of some more personal experiences like this, it was time for the Girls for a feedback discussion with the project team, including our Founder and General Director, Jaume Sanllorente, which became an extremely fun and interactive session with girls sharing their positive criticisms on what can be improved and must not change in the LSE program, as also their desire to continue their association with Mumbai Smiles as community Change Agents!

Lastly, the event came to an end with a jam session where everyone danced to their heart’s content, EVERYONE (as we can see in the video here!

What a closing ceremony; we are super proud of our girls to have organised this entire event so successfully!
