Awareness About Basic Human Rights

 In Mumbai Smiles

This week our Jump 2 Justice team members went to preschool centre which is being run by Mumbai Smiles Foundation in Prajapur Pada, Arrey Colony to conduct monthly parent-teacher meeting.

However, this meeting was slightly different from the other monthly meetings. They gave a talk about some of the basic human rights, in order to educate people on what they are entitled to as human beings, despite their economic and social backgrounds.

The importance of this meeting was very evident. The people living in these areas are unfortunately unaware of their basic human rights and therefore, never say a word against injustice. These meetings are to educate people into wanting social justice and fight for their basic rights.

We are taking the first steps. The meeting went pretty well, and some of the things we said really sunk in to the parents. We spoke about the right to equality, the right of religious freedom, the right to freedom, the right to not be exploited, all very simply explained, with lots of examples, and we had parents stay after the talk to the team, ask questions and also wanting to help spread what we were doing.

It’s a slow process, but it’s more than rewarding to see our efforts result in people standing up for themselves and fighting for a better life.
