Abul Kalam Muhiyuddin Ahmed Azad (11 November 1888 – 22 February 1958) was an Indian scholar and a senior political leader of the Indian independence movement. Following India’s independence, he became the first Minister of Education in the Indian government. In 1992 he was posthumously awarded India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna. His contribution to establishing the education foundation in India is recognised by celebrating his birthday as “National Education Day” across India. As India’s Education Minister, Azad oversaw the establishment of a national education system with free primary education and modern institutions of higher education such as Indian Institutes of Technology. National Education Day of India is celebrated on 11 November every year in India to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. Though the beginning was modest, the HRD later organized the event in a big way in 2008.

We at Mumbai Smiles believe that education is the key to uplift the society. Our Future Smiles and Girl Child Education projects have been founded with the same philosophy. Through the Future Smiles, we mentor and provide scholarships to needy and ambitious youth in the age group of 13 – 22 years from underprivileged background. The project also provides individual mentoring, group learning, exposure to various successful institutions and personalities and thereby a holistic development along with the social empowerment of student beneficiaries. Till now 563 students have received scholarship support. Students along with parents, teachers and peer group are involved for holistic development. Through group sessions & counseling we have reached out to 7550 beneficiaries.

On the other hand, Girl Child Education ensures free education for adolescent girls in the age group of 13 – 15 years from the underprivileged families. Through counseling and capacity building, the project also ensures that most of the students are enrolled in professional courses in order to empower them to rise above the poverty line and lead a life with dignity. We have reached out to 104 beneficiaries under this project with more than 50% in the age group of 14-16 years and majority of them belonging to standard 8th to 10t
