Republic Day celebrations

 In Mumbai Smiles

28 JAN 1

India celebrated its Republic Day on Saturday, January 26, 2013.

Republic Day commemorates the date in the year 1950 on which the Constitution of India came into force. The date January 26 was chosen to honour the memory of the declaration of independence of 1930.

While the grand Republic Day Parade takes place at Rajpath, in New Delhi, where the President views the parade, state capitals also have their independent celebrations. Mumbai Smiles commemorated this day with an event and celebrations at all our balwadis (see photos).

Republic Day is not only a day to remember and honour our past, but let’s use it as a moment to pause and think about our country and its citizens’ future.

Also, here is an excerpt from a speech our Executive Director India, Narendra Kumar Dundu, gave at Mount Mary High School in Goregaon (W), where he was invited to be the chief guest on the occasion:

In the last 64 years, our country has made substantial progress in all fields, particularly in the last two decades, and is viewed today as a land of opportunities and an emerging global economic superpower.

India is poised for truly exciting times ahead with several more opportunities and challenges emerging in step with India’s growth:

* The aspirations of a young population

* Expanding corporate sector and

* The imperative of inclusive growth

My dear students, you are the builders of the future of our nation. When I look at you, I see some great future medical and technical professionals, teachers, soldiers, administrators, development professionals, writers, designers and actors and so on. But do you know, what is required the most to become great?

Yes, it is knowledge.

I’d like to highlight and put forth my point of view that:

1. Learning is a continuous process and you must look out for opportunities to learn so that your skills and knowledge are continuously upgraded and relevant to the needs of the society.

2. Punctuality and honesty

3. Say No when somebody is asking you to step outside your true responsibilities and outside your comfort zone to take on a task that is dangerous or one that will overload you and affect your academic work and your reputation

4. You need to be gender sensitive.

5. We have to make our country free from the clutches of poverty and ignorance.

The younger generation of today should make their parents and every other Indian feel proud of our rich culture, languages, traditions and customs.

Let us never think what the country has given us or what did the country do for us but let us think what we can give to our nation or do for our nation.

I wish you all and your families, peace and prosperity in the days ahead and success and fulfilment in all actions.

Wishing you all a Happy Republic Day.
