International Volunteer’s Day

 In Mumbai Smiles

10 december I

International Volunteer Day is a global celebration of volunteers. It takes place every year on December 5 to shine a light on the impact of volunteer efforts everywhere. Volunteers are leading social change around the world. This special day promotes the work of volunteers at all levels, including local, national and international. United Nations Volunteers founded International Volunteer Day in 1985.

International Volunteer Day (IVD) is a chance for volunteer-involving organizations and individual volunteers to promote their contributions to development at local, national and international levels. By merging UN support with a grassroots mandate, IVD is a unique opportunity for volunteer-involving organizations to work with government agencies, non-profit organizations, community groups and private sector.

IVD was established by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly through Resolution 40/212 on 17 December 1985. Since then, governments, the UN system and civil society organizations have successfully joined volunteers around the world to celebrate the Day on 5th December. The United Nations General Assembly in its resolution 52/17 of 20 November 1997 proclaimed 2001 as the International Year of Volunteers (IYV). The year was conceived for the purpose of furthering the recognition of volunteers, facilitating their work, creating a network of communication and promoting the benefits of voluntary service.

Through the years, International Volunteer Day has been used strategically: many countries have focused on volunteers’ contributions to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, a set of time-bound targets to combat poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and discrimination against women.

The organization of International Volunteer Day is generally the result of a partnership between the UN system, governments, volunteer-involving organizations and committed individuals. Representatives from media or academia, foundations, private sector, faith groups, and sports and recreational organizations are often involved.

The theme for IVD 2013 is “Young. Global. Active”. On IVD 2013, The United Nations will not only celebrate and recognize volunteerism in all its facets, but also pay special tribute to the contribution of youth volunteers in global peace and sustainable human development.
