Narendra Kumar, EDI Mumbai Smiles, discussing the concerns with the beneficiaries

Interactions are central to develop. Hearing the voices of who you work for makes your services more valuable. With this philosophy in mind, on 19th December 2014, the Mumbai Smiles HOPE Project Team organized a Beneficiary Committee meeting in order to assess the impact of HOPE project.  The meeting was held at Holy Spirit Hospital. The meeting was headed by Mr. Narendra Kumar Dundu (EDI), Dr. Nirmal Ahuja (Health Unit Head) and Mrs. Supriya Dhumal (Programme Officer, HOPE project) on behalf of Mumbai Smiles and Sr. Navmani (Hope Project accountant), representing Holy Spirit Hospital and beneficiary committee members. The objective of the meeting was to take feedback from Beneficiary Committee Members regarding the HOPE Project and analyze its overall achievement and progress, evaluate accomplished activities under HOPE Project, suggest improvements and create a platform for interaction between HOPE Team beneficiaries and counterparties.

These meetings provide a platform for connecting with the most integral part of the system i.e. beneficiaries. These meetings ensure that whatever benefits are initiated for the beneficiaries reach them and also meet their critical needs. This is the one time when every beneficiary is given an equal opportunity to make their voices heard in front of the management, in a systematic way.

Reshma Deshmukh, mother of Sahil, a beneficiary of our Hope project, appreciated Mumbai smiles for helping her in all possible ways including financial help. She said, “Without Mumbai Smiles support, we would have sold our home since we couldn’t afford Sahil’s treatment”. Particularly, she emphasized on the nutrition counseling and supplement sessions that helped reduce her financial and mental stress.

Kalawati Patel, aunt of Ankitaanother HOPE beneficiary, also appreciated the efforts of Mumbai smiles. She informed that Dr.Nirmal always encouraged Ankita for education despite her health problem.

One common request raised by all the beneficiary members was to provide food maintenance during treatment in cash. Mr. Narendra Kumar had his reservations against it since in past, beneficiaries had used it for their personal purposes. Also, there is no way to monitor the use of such cash disbursal. This might also create problems during audit and raise concerns on the objective and activities of the project. Members from the Hospital team agreed in unanimity regarding this concern.

The meeting finally ended with a vote of thanks from Supriya.
