Highlights of 2013 in relation to Eye and health camps

The year 2013 saw some successful initiatives from Mumbai Smiles in the area of healthcare. The most prominent among them were the eye and health camps organized throughout the year. Through these camps, Mumbai Smiles was able to reach out to a large number of beneficiaries and address their health issue, thus promoting good health, preventing diseases and facilitating early treatment of illnesses. Some of our successful endeavors in this area were:

1) Eye and Dental screening camp organized in association with Aditya Jyot Foundation and Students from Terna Dental College for primary school children at St. Rocks High School in Marol.

    • 250 children screened for dental problems and eye ailments
    • 65 underwent follow up treatment.
    • Common eye complaints included refractive errors, strabismus, stye and conjunctivitis whereas the common dental complaints were caries, bleeding gums, periodontal pockets.

2) One Day Mega Health Screening Camp conducted in association with Deloitte, Aditya Jyot Foundation and Doctors from Terna Dental College and MGM Medical College at Pragatik High School, Marol for senior secondary children

    • 567 children screened for Eye ailments, Dental problems, Skin ailments and ENT (Ears, Nose & Throat) ailments.
    • 137 children underwent further check up and treatment.
    •  Common eye complaints were refractive errors, strabismus, stye and conjunctivitis whereas the common dental complaints included caries, bleeding gums, periodontal pockets etc. Although few, but common skin complaints were related to fungal infections, vitamin deficiencies and dermatitis

3) Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) screening camp organized on 15th October 2013 in collaboration with Cancer Patient AID Association (CPAA) for early detection and prevention of cervical cancer among underprivileged women including Mumbai Smiles SEED project beneficiaries

  • 100+ women screened and suspected cases advised for further treatment. Ms. Varsha Usgaonkar, an Indian film actress from Goa, attended the event.
