 In Mumbai Smiles

21 JAN 1

In the last week of December, we organised a special workshop for our 25 balwadi teachers.

Organised in collaboration with the Mumbai Smiles Health Unit and Larsen & Toubro health centre in Andheri (E), the purpose of the one-day workshop was to:

* Enhance the awareness among Balwadi teachers on issues of Maternal and Child Health (MCH), services and nutrition.

* Increase knowledge of communication and build their capacity of planning and supervisory skills to effectively integrate MCH services in the community.

The resource people included well-known paediatrician Dr. Shubhada Joshi who talked about the cyclical approach starting with maternal health then moving on to child health and nutrition issues, followed by a session on effective communication skills for the teachers conducted Communication and Gender specialist Daiwashala Giri.

Some of the topics covered were:

* Antenatal care, healthcare during pregnancy

* Common problems during pregnancy

* Nutrition during pregnancy

* Menstrual hygiene among girls/women and anemia

* Basic newborn care

* Immunisation

* Diarrhoea management and hygiene practices

* Milestones & child development

* Psychological development of the child

* Basic communication skills

* How to influence the community and help in spreading the message.

* Overall development as a teacher and being a role model for the community

This training has helped to increase the awareness and knowledge of the Balwadi teachers and will help enhance their communication skills. It will, in turn, help pregnant and lactating mothers, children up to the age of 5 years in the community, as the teachers will be motivated to conduct meetings with the mothers, parents and also within their respective community areas.

Our next step to organise health camps and health awareness programmes and also train the assistants of the Balwadis and Self-help groups in the respective areas to build an effective and strong team of trainers within the community.
