The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. Since its inception, the Vision of the TISS has been to be an institution of excellence in higher education that continually responds to changing social realities through the development and application of knowledge, towards creating a people-centered, ecologically sustainable and just society that promotes and protects dignity, equality, social justice and human rights for all.

TISS offers a 2 – year program named M.A. in Livelihoods and Social Entrepreneurship. The overall objectives of the course are as follows:

  • To develop students’ practical skills in addressing social, economic and environmental issues and challenges.
  • To provide a structured field based platform to understand social innovation for people-centered development.
  • To enhance opportunities by synthesizing classroom learning with its application in social work practice.

As part of this program, the final year students (Fourth Semester) of the TISS College are required to visit an organisation pioneering in innovative strategies – challenging societal issues of the poor and engaging in creation of social value. The visits takes place over a period of 5 weeks with structured objectives. The students visited Mumbai Smiles office for 4 sessions from 21st November to 9th December. A visit to the Balwadis was organized during this time. The sessions revolved around various topics of Social Innovation like Goal Setting and understanding organizational content and context of social innovation, Understanding the process of social innovation and nature of social value creation, Barriers and Drivers for the organization and Identifying and assessing the outcome and factors of impact and social value.

The students learned a lot during these visits and 4 of them – Minal, Kanak, Shubhanjali and Pradeep shared their feedback as under:

Minal: “The experience has been great. The staff has been committed towards the students. And, I must say each individual is committed in the organisation. More field visits would have helped us understand the processes more.”

Kanak: “The entire team at Mumbai Smiles is very cooperative and helpful.”

Shubhanjali: “I found the organization very organized with all job roles well defined and everybody focused and committed towards putting in their bit.”

Pradeep: “It was really a good learning experience. All of you are good professionals and committed people. Please keep it up.”
