The Balwadi Project is designed with the motto of ‘Cultivating Healthy Habits through Education’ in order to address the Educational as well as Health & Nutritional needs of slum children between 1 to 6 years of age. The project is run through 25 Balwadis spread across five different slum areas of Mumbai, having population of close to half a million. Due to low income and unemployment, parents are unable to provide pre-school education and proper nutrition to their children. The project helps address these needs along with preventing school drop outs in the future. In all, 2730 children have been enrolled in the Balwadis since 2010.

Physical activity stimulates growth and leads to improved physical and emotional health among children. Highly active children are less likely to suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer of the colon, obesity, and coronary heart disease later in life. But sport, not just exercise, gives a child more than just physical well-being. It contributes to a child’s development both psychologically and socially. Sports can affect a child’s development of self-esteem and self-worth.

With all such benefits attached to sports, it becomes all the more imperative that we include it in our Balwadi curriculum. Consequently, we organize Sports Day every year across all our Balwadis to enable children learn the importance of sports and physical activities. An annual Sports Day was organized across all our Balwadis from 12th to 16th January.750 Balwadi children participated in the program. Community members and parents were present to provide support to the children.

Five different games were organized during the program viz. bottle hit, bucket ball, giraffe race, elephant race, frog race and book balancing. As soon as students entered the ground, community members started motivating the children. The kids seemed very excited about the event and got an entire day to spend on the playground. The program brought smiles on the faces of these innocent children and gave them unforgettable memories.

The Sports day certainly ensures holistic development of children and makes them learn about the importance of physical activities. Children look forward to such events throughout the year.
