The Educational projects of Mumbai Smiles aims at a holistic mental and physical growth of the young minds residing in the select slum areas of Andheri East and neighbouring areas in Mumbai by way of scholarships, workshops as well as nutritional supplements. The workshops conducted for the beneficiaries include not only soft skills but life skills as well as sessions on health, nutrition and hygiene.

The Higher Education and Girl Child Education projects team recently organised a session on Reproductive Health Education for all the beneficiaries. Sexual Education is a subject of taboo in many Indian households, more so in the slum areas of our country and that makes it all the more imperative to discuss this topic in order to educate these young minds, so as to avoid any accidents and malpractices of the same and prevent ill-experimentation. While these sessions are conducted separately as part of the Life Skills Empowerment project, this special session was conducted in the classrooms of our partner schools, separately for the girls and boys of the projects with the objective to educate the students about reproductive health and personal sexuality, in order to eliminate their doubts and myths about the same as well as develop a positive attitude towards personal sexuality.

The session began with an ice-breaking session for all to loosen up and open up to each other’s comments and ideas, followed by discussions on the mental, emotional and physical changes in females and males, menstruation, human conception as well as contraception. With little initial hesitation, the children (in all the respective sessions), slowly opened up to clarify their doubts and our Resource Person was able to clear all the myths surrounding the mentioned topics.

With positive feedback on these sessions, the Team is all set to organise more workshops and sessions for the beneficiaries in the coming weeks and we will of course update about them all on our blog as well for all our dear readers!
