Sanitary Napkins – Step towards Menstrual Health

The Life Skills Empowerment project aims at inculcating important core skills and soft skills that help an individual to lead their daily lives with confidence and ease. These skills include communication skills, time management, critical thinking, sportsmanship, team building, assertiveness, stress management etc. as well as knowledge about reproductive health, STDs, sexual behavior, good touch/bad touch etc, so as to keep oneself healthy and protected from outside danger.

These skills are of no use if the girls aren’t healthy. For which the LSE program also ensures timely nutrition, health checkups and availability of sanitary napkins to the girls so as to ensure that their health is checked and effective measures can be taken for when needed. And part of this, the third sanitary distribution activity was carried our recently at the LSE centre. The girls receive these periodically since the communities where they live, there is a tradition to use cloth or even ash-beds, which are very dangerous for their health in the long-run (the ill effects of these methods include infection causing hormonal imbalances, impotency or even death in severe cases). However, due to lack to resources as well as finances, girls in these underprivileged areas end up using these unhygienic and incorrect methods and stay at home for those 4-5 days of periods by skipping school and cloth out of shame and discomfort. Therefore the LSE program ensures that the sanitary napkins are made available to these girls regularly so that at least their education and daily life doesn’t suffer due to menstruation.

These napkins this year have been made available thanks to our volunteers, two college going students Ishitaa and Vanshika who organised a bake sale in their compound and donated sanitary napkins with the proceeds from the same. Another huge thanks has to go to our CSR partner Courtyard Marriott for donating the napkins for our girls. It is because of the efforts of you, our supporters and partners, that we are able to make small little changes in the lives of these young girls today to secure a healthy and safe future for them tomorrow!
