The Preschool Education project, earlier (and locally) known as Balwadi Project, is one that focuses on the education as well as health aspect of tiny children in the age group of 1-6 years old, residing in select slum communities of Andheri East. Within our seven project areas, there are a total of 30 preschool education centres (26 physical centres with four running in double shifts) and each of these centres have 31 children admitted for each academic year.
Through the academic year, the Preschool project team organises a number of interesting events for the children in order to provide for holistic learning and growth opportunities, such as Drawing Competitions (on themes such as Mother Earth, Festival of Diwali etc.), Fancy Dress Competition (on themes such as Our Daily Support System like Police, Postman, Milkman, Teachers etc.), celebrating events like Children’s Day, Annual Sports Day and other such extra-curricular activities, which are extremely important for the children to develop their creativity and social skills.
Next week, one such important event is being held for these tiny tots to celebrate two important occasions – Children’s Day (which falls on Nov 14) and International Child Rights Day (which falls on Nov 20). And so the Bal Mahotsav (Children’s Grand Event) has been organised for which all the children, teachers as well as members of local Self Help Groups (that provide nutritious food for the children regularly) are getting ready for various performances and exhibition for the grand event. Different centres have clubbed together to put together this event in five of our project areas and the practice sessions and preparations are on in full force! The agenda for the day is also to create awareness among the parents in the community about Child Rights by the JUMP2justice project team.
We cannot wait to see the tiny tots perform on stage! And we will surely update our blog as well with all the cute pictures from the event.
