In my view, education is the key to solving the problems of the untouchables, of the poor, in India. They must be set free, and the only way to set these people free is to break the chains of ignorance.” – Jaume Sanllorente (Bombay Smiles, 2009). Yashodhan School was founded with the very same belief. However, when Jaume first encountered Yashodhan school, it was on the verge of closing down and the students were about to be abandoned. Jaume involved himself in the process of breaking those chains and rewrote the faith of several students by embarking upon his journey to change the lives of students of Yashodhan School.

Aristotle has right said, “The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.” This very principle is embedded in the philosophy of Yashodhan School. The school is based out of Shashtri Nagar, Thane and caters to the needs of students from class 1st to 10th and provides schooling in both Marathi and English medium. The school strives to ensure that students between the age group of 6-14 years have access to education. The association of Mumbai Smiles with Yashodhan School dates back to its foundation. At that time, the school was under a financial crisis and was on the verge of closing down. Mumbai Smiles became aware of the school’s economic situation and decided to support the school and turn it around. Mumbai Smiles adopted a three-tier strategy to turn around the school and make it self- sustainable. (To know more about this strategy, check out our blog tomowrrow). After an association of almost 8 years with Yashodhan, Mrs. Rathi, Principal Yashodhan School describes the journey to be extremely fruitful and the relationship to be warm and caring one, due to which several students have flourished and became successful. According to her, “Mumbai Smiles has been a part of numerous turning points for the School. The most commendable ones are the support for renovation of the school building and the increment in salaries of the teaching and non-teaching staff. In the last 6 years the School has consistently improved its SSC results and the drop-out rate has conspicuously reduced.” The seed sown several years back has finally borne its fruits. Yashodhan School marks the monumental success of Mumbai Smiles. The smiling faces of the children encourage us to continue to transform lives at a much larger scale.

Jaume is the founder of Mumbai Smiles. Around 8 years ago, Jaume’s first mission for change in the city of Mumbai was to ensure sustainability of the Yashodhan School and guide its students towards the path of education.
