“Commercial Law. I think I’ll be good at that.” These are the words of a 10th standard girl, Sravani Chalke, a beneficiary of our Girl Child Education Project, studying in St. Rocks High School (one of our partner schools in Marol area in Andheri East) and preparing for her standard 10th exams. Self-confidence oozing out of her, 13 year old Sravani is very clear of her life goals, which is a trait not found in many 10th standard students!

Sravani Sachin Chalke shifted from Thane to Marol area six years ago. Life threw quite a few curve balls her way when her father left her mother to remarry another woman. This left her mother to work alone all day to fend for Sravani and her sister and so she started working as a street vendor.

A regular bright child in school, Sravani was struggling with severe financial crisis at home, when her class teacher strongly recommended her name to us, Mumbai Smiles, for scholarship under the Girl Child Education Program. And then under this project, Sravani received not only scholarship for her classes, but also regular school kit for her daily school activities.

With the dream of becoming a top commercial lawyer one day, Sravani dedicates her entire day in pursuit of knowledge. Post her school hours, she attends tuition classes in the afternoon and indulges in self-study in her spare time and has set her own timetable and deadlines to meet for her exams and daily studies.

Also, under the Girl Child Education project, she has been regular in attending the free health camps (eye-check up, dental and more), capacity building sessions, family education and more to identify her own strengths and weaknesses and has taken control of her own and her family’s future.

“This project has not only helped reduce the financial burden on my mother but also helped me live a better life in many ways”, she says. “I feel much confident now. With the Girl Child Education project investing in children like me with not only scholarships but the additional workshops and sessions on personality development, life skills development, time management, subject management, communication skills and nutrition, I have learnt a lot about health, hygiene, discipline and problem-solving skills! I think it will be very beneficial for more students like me if Mumbai Smiles started such a program for our higher education and career development as well”, she suggests.

All the Best Sravani! We are sure you are going to be a very responsible lawyer one day. #GoGirl !
