“When we think we know, we cease to learn”
– Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
For centuries, Teacher’s Day has been celebrated in its own way in various countries of the world. In India as well, till today we celebrate the occasion of Guru Purnima to pay homage to our teachers who guide us and help shape the future generation of our country. But come 20th century, different countries have marked respective days to be celebrated as Teacher’s Day. In India, Teacher’s Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan – a philosopher and author and an advocate of importance of education. Dr. Radhakrishnan was the first elected Vice President and the second President of Free India, who deeply believed that, “teachers are the best minds in the country”. Born in British India, Dr. Radhakrishnan’s family didn’t have enough money to support his education, so, on his own merit, he won many scholarships and went on to gain Masters in Philosophy. In his lifetime, he was awarded with many titles, including Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India as well as Knighthood & British Royal Order of Merit from England. Before entering politics, he was a renowned professor in many universities in India and abroad (including Benaras Hindu University and Oxford University), and his work on comparative religion, philosophy and ethics earned him a Nobel Prize nomination in Literature as well.
Teachers are definitely the guiding souls on our planet, without whom a generation of children will become directionless. They are the second set of parents every child has and today we take this day to thank all the teachers & assistant teachers of our Preschool Education Centre as well as our Life Skills Animator, who work tirelessly every day in our centres to nurture the future of our city and help build a brighter, healthier and more equal future for those belonging to the most disadvantaged section of our society.
As our Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi tweeted this morning, “let us make the next 5 years about ‘teach to transform, educate to empower and learn to lead’ ”, we truly believe that teachers are the strongest guiding force in any child’s life, having the maximum impact on their psyche and are hence pivotal to creating a most socially just and equal society. Thank you to all the teachers!!!
