Founder inaugurates Travel Talks in Spain

In Awareness, Events, Mumbai Smiles, Thank You

Over the last 12 years, ever since our Founder, Jaume Sanllorente began his anti-poverty project by the name of Sonrisas de Bombay and Mumbai Smiles (the two hve become sister organisations today), numerous press coverages, conferencs and talks have helped us to spread the word of the work that he is dedicated towards, to help us achieve our dream of seeing a poverty-free Mumbai. A journalist by profession, Jaume became an author after his stint with Mumbai and its cruel reality after penning down his experiences in his book by the same name, and till today, we get numerous visitors every year at our Mumbai Smiles office, who come to see our projects first hand and experience the change that we are trying to bring about in this City of Dreams.

Earlier this month, Jaume was invited to inaugurate the travel talks, on the theme of “Writing as a Social Commitment”, organised by the Libraries of Girona, promoted by the Ulyssus Bookstore in Girona, a beautiful city in Spain, where Jaume explained how he has managed to make his words, by way of his book that shares its name with the organisation, and other writings, a tool of activisim and social commitment in the city of Mumbai, since 2005.

An auditorium of more than 60 people welcomed the author, who, for almost two hours did a review of his work relating the content of it with different social problems and the need to be socially responsible in our lives. In his talk, Jaume insisted that “explaining and denouncing an unjust reality is the first step to combat it”, explaining his statement of “Write to make a complaint.”

Talking about the meaning of happiness, Jaume defined it as the need need to fight for the freedom of all people, guaranteeing the rights of all, using access to education as a strategic tool to achieve it. And agreeing with him were the attendees of the talk who shared their experiences of their trip to Mumbai through our organisation, as they said, it gave them an opportunity to know the underprivileged communities with which the organisation works. These communities are at the forefront of the social transformation that drives this shared project. The author called to travel with open mind and heart and remembered that the Foundation makes available to anyone who wants the option of knowing the other side of the city of Mumbai, that of inequalities and that of a citizenship that strives for conquering Rights and opportunities and building a more just society for EVERYONE.
