Exposure Visit: Nehru Planetarium

 In Life Skills Empowerment
The Future Smiles project at Mumbai Smiles was designed with the motto of ‘Educating Disadvantaged Youth in Mumbai and has envisioned mentoring and providing scholarships to needy and ambitious youth in the age group of 13 – 22 years from underprivileged background. It provides individual mentoring, group learning, exposure to various successful institutions and personalities and thereby a holistic development along with the social empowerment of student beneficiaries. This project also promotes Life Skills empowerment for adolescent girls in the age group of 6 – 13 years from the underprivileged families.
With this objective, we organized a short visit to Nehru Planetarium for our LSE beneficiaries to give them an exposure of different parts of the city and to make them aware of the solar system and its functions.
Nehru Planetarium museum is selfexplanatory. The museum has information about India’s freedom struggle, the Stone Age period and various eras, the kings and their kingdoms.
The girls were taken to a show at the planetarium where they were explained about the order of each of 9 planets and the time taken by these planets to revolve around the sun.
Later, they were also taken to the auditorium where a 1 hour film was shown about planet Mars. The film covered various developments that have taken place on Mars so far.
The girls shared that their experience was of a different kind altogether. It was different information than the usual. For few girls, getting out of the community and getting such an exposure was extremely thrilling.

These visits enable the girls to become more confident. They feel more independent and confident to travel to any place in the near future.
