The Green Batti Project is an initiative by Thinkquisitive that enables young professionals to mentor children from lower income groups through a structured curriculum. Over a span of 4 months, mentor-mentee pairs learn together, share secrets, explore new ideas and most importantly get an insight into each other’s world – an experience which new media can never replicate. The mentor inspires the mentee and nudges him/her to move forward not letting his/her prevailing socio-economic circumstances be a deterrent. Often, children from under resourced communities lack positive adult relationships, hindering a refreshing perspective and an unyielding motivation for these children. These children are bound by their prevailing socio-economic conditions, without any exposure to what lies outside those bounds. Green Batti aims to provide them with a mentor who acts as a friend, guide and constructive critic and who enables them to grasp the next step of their life in a confident and inspired way.

We are one of the partner organisations and hence each student from our community will be allocated a mentor. The mentor – mentee pair shall be chosen based on similar locations, gender and interests. This cycle will take place over a period of 4 months, where the pair shall meet once a week for two hours at a mutually convenient time. The venue for such meetings will be pre-authorized public places such as coffee shops, parks and culture spaces near to the mentee’s area of residence. The mentors will be chosen after an exhaustive screening and background check. The selected candidates will then attend an intensive training by Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Every pair will also be assigned a case manager who will attend to various needs, address queries and help resolve any issues on a real time basis.

85 students from our community have been paired with mentors and the meetings have already begun. These mentors have been trained by the Green Batti team on various topics that shall be covered by them during their meetings with mentees.
