Life skills have been defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as “abilities for adaptive and positive behavior that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life”. They represent the psycho-social skills that determine valued behaviour and include reflective skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking, to personal skills such as self-awareness, and to interpersonal skills. Practicing life skills leads to qualities such as self-esteem, sociability and tolerance, to action competencies to take action and generate change, and to capabilities to have the freedom to decide what to do and who to be.

Life skills-based education is now recognized as a methodology to address a variety of issues of child and youth development.

Mumbai Smiles strives to provide holistic services to the adolescents for their overall personality development and prepare them to face life with positivism and rational thinking. We launched the pilot project for LSE (Life Skill Education) in the year 2014. This project registered a huge appreciation from the community. The outcome of the project was vividly evident through the positive behavioral and attitudinal  changes in the girls enrolled under the project.

On 28th July 2015 formal launch of LSE Project was held at Mumbai Smiles office. The distinguished guest for the event was Mr.Yashwant Mankhedkar, Youth Director, Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK). NYK is a government body which is a renowned platform for youth related issues in the country. Our knowledge sharing partners for this intervention are SAHYOG, OSKAR Foundation & FPAI (Family Planning Association of India). These organizations are experts in LSE and have unique innovative ideas of reaching out to adolescents. Mumbai Smiles is proud to be associated with all of them.

The project would benefit the adolescents boys & girls in the community by catering to the challenges they face while growing up. It would also clarify lot of misconceptions regarding their changing physical and emotional needs. The project will give the adolescents a fair opportunity to utilize their energies in the right direction and make an informed choice for a better future.
