The Higher Education project primarily works by way of providing scholarships, wholly or partially, to students of slum communities to ensure that they are no devoid of their Right to Education and to bring them into mainstream education. For this, each year, scholarship forms are given out to such students at our partner schools, of which the most deserving students.
For the academic year 2017-18, the forms were given out earlier in the year. Post the submission of the forms, background check was done to ensure that the students are genuinely interested in pursuing their education and truly deserve the scholarship. Once the background check was complete with home and school visits and interviews, the scholarships were given out to 60 students! These students will now also receive school utility kits and will also be groomed through different personality and capacity building sessions.
The day of scholarship distribution included a meeting with the students as well as their parents, where before handing out the intimation letters about the same; a brief orientation was first conducted to explain to them the exact procedure that was followed (including academic performance and financial background of the students). Post which the activities for the rest of the year were explained to them and they were encouraged to come forward and participate in these sessions and other activities, as it is for their own benefit. And this received a very encouraging and positive response from all those present. The parents expressed their happiness at hearing about the various events and activities (such as Career Fair, Science Fair, Awareness Sessions etc.) and the students seemed excited for the year ahead! Well, even we cannot wait to start with these sessions soon!
