5th December, International Volunteer Day

“On this International Volunteer Day, let us be inspired by the many individuals who selflessly serve others, and let us resolve to do our part to contribute, freely and proactively, to change conditions now towards a better future for all.” – Ban Ki-moon – Secretary-General, United Nations.

The International Volunteer Day (IVD) mandated by the UN General Assembly, is held each year on 5 December. It is viewed as a unique chance for volunteers and organizations to celebrate their efforts, to share their values, and to promote their work among their communities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), United Nations agencies, government authorities and the private sector. IVD 2014 highlights the contribution of volunteers in engaging people from the grass-roots in decision-making processes, ultimately creating space for participation that leads to: stronger governance, social cohesion, peace and sustainable development.

The theme for 2014 is: People’s participation. Make change happen, volunteer!

At Mumbai Smiles, we value the contribution of our volunteers the most. They come forward and contribute their valuable time to uplift the society. On this volunteer’s day, we would like to thank them for their invaluable contribution, not only towards our organization but also towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

Chiranshu, one of our dedicated volunteers who maintains this blog and who has been volunteering since the last 1 year has the following to say,” It’s wonderful to be part of such an amazing team and getting an opportunity to create an impact in the society. Right from the start, the team members have been appreciative and have recognized my efforts by inviting me to various events and surprising me by writing about me on their blogs. I have got a unique platform to be creative and give back to the society and I look forward to write articles daily. All these blogs have created wonderful memories for me and the best part is that even later in my life, I will have access to these strong impressions and can always cherish them.
